Dbeibah’s direct challenge to Trump at Davos

Libya’s Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, head of the Government of National Unity, identified three major challenges facing his country whilst addressing the World Economic Forum on Wednesday: competing influences from military, religious ideological and former regime forces seeking governmental control.

At the international gathering, Dbeibah expressed optimism regarding Libya’s democratic transition, citing progress towards establishing a constitution. “We are moving closer to becoming a democratic state,” he said.

Whilst being questioned about potential policy implications, Dbeibah emphasised that security measures alone cannot resolve Libya’s complex situation. He cautioned that supporting individual Libyan factions could undermine existing progress.

“Security-only approaches have proved insufficient, as we’ve seen in Afghanistan and Syria,” Dbeibah said. “We must consider culture, heritage and human factors, whilst addressing the gap between public demands and governing powers.”

The Prime Minister advocated for a more comprehensive approach to stability. “If the goal is stability, we need to explore genuine solutions beyond security measures,” he said, warning that partisan support could reverse progress.
