EU urges immediate de-escalation amid rising tensions in Tripoli

The European Union Delegation to Libya, along with the diplomatic missions of EU Member States, has issued a joint statement calling for urgent de-escalation as tensions mount in Tripoli and its surrounding areas.
The statement comes amid reports of increased military mobilisation near the capital, raising fears of renewed conflict. The EU urged all Libyan parties to refrain from violence, stressing the importance of upholding the ceasefire agreement and the related security arrangements previously endorsed by all sides.
“It is imperative that all parties cease hostilities and commit to resolving disputes through peaceful and inclusive dialogue,” the statement read, highlighting the need to preserve stability and prevent a return to armed confrontation.
The EU further emphasised the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in accordance with international humanitarian law. “We call on all actors to ensure the safety and dignity of the civilian population and to avoid actions that could lead to further harm,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to accountability, the EU warned that any actions threatening peace, civilian safety, or the integrity of the political process would be met with appropriate consequences.
The statement concluded with strong support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), encouraging all parties to engage in constructive dialogue under UN auspices to address tensions and move forward with the political process.
This call for calm follows recent reports of armed build-ups that have raised alarm among residents and the international community alike, amid concerns that Libya’s fragile peace could unravel.
