UN officials welcome end of Libya’s oil-for-fuel arrangements

Deputy Special Representatives of the UN Secretary-General, Stephanie Koury and Ulrika Richardson, have welcomed the ending of Libya’s “oil-for-fuel” arrangements in February.

The remarks came during a meeting in Tripoli with the President of the Audit Bureau, Khaled Shakshak, according to the UN Support Mission in Libya.

UNSMIL said the two officials urged all parties to avoid any return to opaque arrangements that had drained public resources.

The meeting also underlined the need to keep oversight institutions independent and protected from political interference and armed groups, while strengthening their role in exposing corruption, safeguarding transparency in public finances and promoting good governance in Libya.

Koury and Richardson also congratulated 101 Audit Bureau employees on receiving international accreditation as auditors.

The UN mission said the achievement would help strengthen the bureau’s technical capacity and support its independent oversight of state institutions and public spending.
