Washington backs unified budget and political roadmap for Libya

A senior adviser to the US President on Arab and African affairs has reiterated Washington’s strong backing for efforts to strengthen Libya’s state institutions, implement a unified national budget, and advance towards elections alongside expanded economic opportunities.
Massad Boulos made the remarks during a speech at a conference organised by the National Council on US-Libya Relations, attended by Musa al-Koni. In his address, he outlined a vision for Libya’s future built on three key pillars: the integration of military and security institutions, strengthened regional cooperation across the country’s east, west and south, and enhanced transparency through a unified economic framework.
Boulos said the United States would remain at the forefront of diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing Libya’s rival factions together. He urged political leaders to prioritise national interests over narrow agendas, stressing that agreement on a unified budget represents a cornerstone for coherent economic policy and the joint management of oil revenues to ensure fair distribution of resources.
He also welcomed what he described as “notable progress” by Libyan leaders in recent months towards bridging divisions and fostering rapprochement. Any future political initiative, he added, must be inclusive and enjoy broad-based support across Libya’s regions and institutions in order to safeguard national sovereignty.
The remarks reflect continued international focus on stabilising Libya through institutional reform, economic coordination, and a renewed push towards long-delayed national elections.
