António Guterres urge Libyans to set new election date
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has praised the high turnout by the Libyan people in voter registration, which was represented by the receipt of 2.8 million electoral cards.
“This necessitates holding presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya, under certain conditions, in order to reach a peaceful political transition and transfer power to an elected, democratic institution”, Guterres added.
Guterres also welcomed the commitment of the High National Elections Commission to the electoral process, and praised its recommendations submitted to the House of Representatives, according to the spokesman of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya will continue efforts to confront the current challenges and ensure the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, he confirmed.
