In a diplomatic move aimed at de-escalating the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, British Foreign Minister James Cleverly has called on Iran to utilise its influence in the Middle East region. Cleverly emphasised the need for Iran to prevent further escalation and urged the country to use its sway over groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

During a conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Friday, Cleverly made it clear that Iran bears responsibility for the actions of these groups, which it has supported for many years. The British Foreign Office stated that Cleverly also reiterated the unacceptability of Iranian-backed threats against individuals in the United Kingdom, emphasizing the urgent need for them to cease.

Britain has consistently supported Israel’s right to self-defense, particularly in the wake of the October 7 attack by Hamas. Israel claimed that the attack resulted in the deaths of 1,400 individuals, predominantly civilians, with over 200 others being kidnapped.

Cleverly’s call for Iran’s intervention comes at a critical juncture in the conflict, as tensions continue to rise. The international community has expressed concerns over the escalating violence and the potential for further casualties. By urging Iran to utilize its influence, Cleverly hopes to bring about a peaceful resolution and prevent further loss of life.

The British government’s stance reflects its commitment to stability in the region and its recognition of the role Iran plays in the conflict. Cleverly’s diplomatic efforts align with the broader international community’s desire for a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

As the situation unfolds, the world watches with bated breath, hoping that diplomatic efforts such as Cleverly’s will pave the way for a lasting peace in the Middle East. The coming days will reveal whether Iran heeds the call and takes decisive action to prevent further escalation, or if the conflict continues to spiral out of control.
