Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Russia Discuss Syria Conflict and Regional Issues
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone conversation Wednesday to discuss developments in northern Syria and other regional matters.
The discussion followed Abdelatty’s earlier call with Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh regarding Arab support for Syria during ongoing conflicts.
During the conversation with Lavrov, Abdelatty affirmed Egypt’s support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, while emphasizing the protection of civilians, according to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry.
Both ministers agreed to maintain coordination between their countries. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that they expressed concern about the escalation of conflict in Syria and discussed preventing regional destabilization from terrorism.
Russia, which has provided military support to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since 2015, has increased air strikes on rebel positions in response to recent northern Syria operations.
The ministers also discussed developments in Sudan. Regarding Gaza, they agreed on the need for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian aid delivery.
The conversation took place amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to address multiple regional conflicts in the Middle East.
