Global power tensions threaten UN Libya mission, says analyst
Political analyst Kamel Al-Marash has suggested that growing divisions within the UN Security Council, heightened by global tensions between Western nations and the BRICS group, are impacting Libya’s peace process.
In comments to Erem News, Al-Marash said debates over extending the UN Support Mission in Libya’s mandate would likely yield similar results without agreement on appointing a new special envoy.
“UNSMIL’s influence remains constrained as key decisions continue to be shaped by major powers – the United States, Britain, and Turkey on one side, and Russia on the other”, Al-Marash told the UAE-based news outlet.
