Ireland names first Palestinian ambassador
DUBLIN — Ireland has approved the appointment of its first-ever Palestinian ambassador to Dublin, deepening diplomatic ties that were established just months ago when Ireland officially recognised Palestinian statehood.
The move comes as part of a broader diplomatic exchange between the two nations. Dr. Wahba Abdalmajid will head the new Palestinian embassy in Dublin, upgrading from the previous lower-level diplomatic representation.
Ireland, in turn, plans to elevate its presence in the West Bank city of Ramallah from a representative office to a full embassy.
The diplomatic upgrade follows Ireland’s recognition of Palestine as a state in May, with formal relations established on September 29.
The decision places Ireland among a growing number of European nations that have taken steps to formally acknowledge Palestinian statehood.
