Israeli PM confirms arms distribution to Gaza clans

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has acknowledged providing weapons to local clans in Gaza as part of efforts to counter Hamas operations in the territory.
The disclosure came following statements by opposition politician Avigdor Lieberman, who serves as a former Defense Minister. Lieberman described the recipients as “criminal gangs” and expressed concerns about the potential future use of these weapons against Israeli interests, citing the absence of monitoring mechanisms.
Netanyahu addressed the matter in a video posted to his X social media account. He stated that the decision was made based on recommendations from security officials and characterised it as beneficial for Israeli military personnel safety.
“On the advice of security officials, we activated clans in Gaza that oppose Hamas,” Netanyahu said. “What’s wrong with that? It’s only a good thing. It only saves the lives of IDF soldiers.”
Israeli state broadcaster Kan TV reported that unnamed officials confirmed the initiative received Netanyahu’s approval and was coordinated with the Shin Bet internal security agency. These sources indicated the program proceeded without Security Cabinet authorisation.
The program involves distributing arms to Gaza-based clans that have positioned themselves in opposition to Hamas. The approach represents one element of Israel’s strategy for operating within Gaza’s complex tribal and political landscape.
Lieberman’s criticism centers on the lack of oversight capabilities, arguing that Israel cannot effectively track or control the weapons once distributed. He warned this could create future security risks for Israeli forces.
