Libya, Tunisia and Algeria agree water consultation mechanism in Tripoli

Tripoli hosts trilateral talks on shared groundwater resources

Tripoli hosted a trilateral ministerial meeting on Wednesday that concluded with the signing of an agreement to establish a consultation mechanism on shared groundwater resources in the northern Sahara, alongside the adoption of a final communiqué named the “Tripoli Declaration”.

The meeting brought together Libya’s Minister of Water Resources, Hosni Oweidan, Tunisia’s Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, Ezzeddine Ben Cheikh, and Algeria’s ambassador to Libya.

Discussions focused on shared groundwater reserves and ways to strengthen coordination in their management, amid growing environmental and climate-related pressures facing the region.

Participants stressed the need to unify and coordinate efforts, while deepening regional cooperation to ensure more sustainable management of water resources.

Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah also met representatives of the water resources sector from the three countries, underlining the importance of regional cooperation and the development of effective mechanisms to preserve water resources and support stability and development across the region.
