Libya under UN pressure over prison official’s ICC warrant

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has expressed concern over the severity of crimes detailed in the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Osama Al-Masry Najim, according to a statement published on its social media platforms.
The Mission highlighted the gravity of the alleged offences, which include crimes against humanity and war crimes, specifically murder, torture, rape and sexual violence.
UNSMIL has called upon Libyan authorities to either arrest Najim and commence investigations to ensure full accountability, or surrender him to the International Criminal Court.
The ICC had issued an arrest warrant for Najim, who heads the Correctional and Rehabilitation Institution in Tripoli.
On January 20, Italian authorities detained Najim in Turin, before subsequently releasing him and returning him to Libya.
