Menfi, U.S. envoy push to revive Libya peace process
U.S. reaffirms commitment to Libya’s democratic transition during talks with Presidential Council chief

President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Menfi, met on Thursday morning in Tripoli with United States Chargé d’Affaires Jeremy Berndt to discuss ways to reactivate Libya’s stalled political process and strengthen international coordination in pursuit of a lasting solution to the country’s prolonged crisis.
In an official statement, the Presidential Council confirmed that the meeting focused on recent political developments and underscored the need to overcome the current impasse through unified efforts. Both sides highlighted the importance of intensifying diplomatic engagement to unify state institutions and pave the way for inclusive national elections.
The discussions also addressed key human rights concerns, with particular attention to conditions in detention centres and prisons. Al-Menfi and Berndt reaffirmed their shared commitment to justice, transparency, and adherence to international legal standards.
Berndt reiterated the United States’ firm support for Libya’s democratic transition, expressing Washington’s continued backing for efforts aimed at achieving national reconciliation, institutional reform, and political stability. He commended al-Menfi’s role in promoting inclusive dialogue and fostering a peaceful path forward.
In a post shared on the U.S. Embassy’s official X account (formerly Twitter), the Chargé d’Affaires welcomed the “crucial work” of the Temporary Security Arrangements Committee in restoring calm in Tripoli, bolstering the ceasefire, and contributing to long-term stability.
He also stressed the importance of moving forward with the United Nations-facilitated political process, affirming that sustainable peace in Libya depends on national ownership backed by coordinated and consistent international support.
