Menfi welcomes new UN Libya committee

Menfi signals support for UN Libya body

Presidential Council Head Mohammed Menfi has endorsed the formation of a United Nations advisory committee whilst emphasising the need for its independence and balanced representation.

In a series of posts on X, Menfi highlighted the Presidential Council’s ongoing coordination with UN institutions and reiterated support for a public referendum on disputed points in the election laws drafted by the “6+6” Committee.

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) unveiled the initiative on 12 January as part of a broader six-point plan to advance the country towards elections. The proposed committee will comprise up to 30 members, with women making up at least 30 per cent of its composition.

“The advisory committee must remain free from external pressures to effectively fulfil its mandate,” Menfi said, urging Libyan institutions to seriously consider the UN advisers’ recommendations.

UNSMIL clarified that the committee, whose members are yet to be selected, will focus on resolving disputes in the 6+6 laws and developing an election roadmap. The mission emphasised that the body will not replace existing legislative institutions.

The initiative is part of a comprehensive approach that includes government unification, national dialogue, economic reforms, security sector integration, and reconciliation efforts.
