President Donald Trump was swiftly evacuated by security personnel after gunfire was reported during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, held at the Washington Hilton on Saturday evening.

Eyewitness footage showed members of the US Secret Service escorting the president and several attendees out of the ballroom following loud noises believed to be gunshots. Guests at the high-profile event were seen taking cover under tables as security agents moved into position around the stage, drawing firearms before leading Mr Trump to safety.

According to reports, the president and First Lady Melania Trump were among the first to be evacuated, followed by senior officials who were escorted out individually.

The dinner, attended by approximately 2,600 guests including politicians, journalists and public figures, descended into confusion as attendees sought shelter. Staff members reportedly moved quickly to safer areas at the front of the hall.

The Associated Press reported that between five and eight shots were heard before the venue was cleared. Meanwhile, Fox News said security forces had “neutralised” the suspected gunman in the hotel lobby before he could enter the main hall.

In a statement cited by Agence France-Presse, the US Secret Service confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

Police cordoned off the hotel as helicopters hovered overhead, while NBC News reported that the building had been fully evacuated. CNN later confirmed that President Trump was not injured.

The incident marked Mr Trump’s first attendance at the correspondents’ dinner during his second term in office. The annual gathering traditionally brings together senior political figures, journalists and celebrities for an evening of speeches and media engagement.

Authorities have not yet released further details about the suspect or the motive behind the shooting, and investigations remain ongoing.
