UK appoints Martin Reynolds as new Ambassador to Libya

British diplomat Martin Reynolds to assume post as Ambassador to Libya in October 2025

The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) announced on Friday, 17 October, the appointment of Martin Reynolds as the new British Ambassador to Libya. He is expected to assume his duties in October 2025, succeeding Martin Longden.

Reynolds is a career diplomat with long experience in international affairs, having served in several senior roles across Africa, Europe and Asia. From 2023 to 2025, he was involved in crisis response work and Arabic language training.

Between 2019 and 2022, he served as Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister at No. 10 Downing Street, and in 2019 briefly as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Libya. Earlier positions include Principal Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary (2014–2018), Deputy High Commissioner in Pretoria (2011–2014), and Counsellor for Trade, Development and Wider World at the UK Mission to the European Union in Brussels (2008–2011).

Reynolds joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1997 and has since held various policy and diplomatic assignments in Singapore, Brussels and London, focusing on European affairs, economic policy and international development.
