UNSMIL releases report on Libya’s electoral challenges

A report published on Tuesday by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) offers potential solutions to the electoral deadlock that has hindered Libya’s political transition.
The recommendations were developed by an Advisory Committee comprising 20 Libyan figures who met repeatedly in both eastern and western regions of the country.
The document presents multiple pathways towards elections, addressing key points of contention that have stalled progress. These include questions about the sequencing of presidential and parliamentary elections, requirements for candidates, voter eligibility, and mechanisms for handling electoral disputes.
“This represents just the first step in what must be a comprehensive national conversation,” stated Hanna Tetteh, who serves as the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative in Libya. She emphasised that addressing the needs of Libyan citizens remains the central priority.
To foster broader participation, UNSMIL announced plans for nationwide surveys designed to gather input from across Libyan society, aiming to strengthen transparency and public involvement in shaping the country’s political future.
