Tunisia Turn to Renard After Lamouchi Fallout

Uncertainty continues to surround the future of Tunisia head coach Sabri Lamouchi as the Tunisian Football Federation moves closer to announcing his dismissal following the national team’s disastrous start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Reports from Mexico suggest a sharp disagreement has emerged within the federation’s executive committee over both the decision to part ways with Lamouchi and the manner in which the move should be announced.

The pressure on Lamouchi intensified after the Carthage Eagles suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the tournament, a result that sparked widespread criticism from supporters and fuelled calls for immediate change.

With his departure reportedly nearing confirmation, French broadcaster M6 has claimed that the Tunisian Football Federation has already contacted former Morocco and Saudi Arabia coach Hervé Renard regarding the possibility of taking charge of the national team.

According to the report, Renard has been offered a long-term project with Tunisia regardless of the team’s eventual performance at the World Cup, underlining the federation’s desire to begin planning beyond the current campaign.

Lamouchi’s position appeared increasingly untenable on Monday after he was absent from the team’s training session, with his assistants overseeing preparations amid growing speculation over his future.

Before reports linking Renard to the role emerged, former Tunisia coach Mondher Kebaier had been widely expected to take charge on an interim basis.

With Tunisia’s World Cup hopes already hanging by a thread, the federation now faces a decision that could shape not only the remainder of the tournament but also the longer-term direction of one of Africa’s most established footballing nations.
