UNSC approves Lebanese Ghassan Salame as new delegate to Libya
The UN Security Council has approved the appointment of a new delegate to Libya to replace the German envoy, Martin Kobler, who has been the Head of the UNSMIL since November 2015.
The UNSC endorsed Ghassan Salame – a former Lebanese Minister of Culture – as the new Head of the UNSMIL and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya.
Salame is a former U.N. adviser in Iraq after the war in 2003 and he is now a Paris-based academic.
He served as a senior adviser to then secretary-general Kofi Annan from 2003-2006, and later as Lebanon’s culture minister. He is currently dean of the Paris School of International Affairs and a professor of international relations at the Paris Institute of Political Studies.
