Arsenal beats Chelsea 2-1 to win F.A. Cup

Arsène Wenger’s turbulent year ended with his third F.A. Cup win in four seasons as Arsenal beat Chelsea, 2-1, on Saturday. Chelsea was thwarted in its attempt to complete a Premier League and F.A. Cup double for the second time, New York Times reported.

Aaron Ramsey had the winning shot, just as in the 2014 final, restoring Arsenal’s lead in the 79th minute shortly after Diego Costa had tied the game for 10-man Chelsea at Wembley Stadium, New York Times added.

Arsenal turned in the type of tenacious display it has often been lacking, and it might just be enough to stem the tide of protests against Wenger, who became the Cup’s most successful manager with his seventh title in his 21-year reign at Arsenal. Those wins have papered over some of the cracks as Arsenal has often come up short in the Premier League and the Champions League, according to New York Times.

For once, so much went right for Wenger, even with a patched-up, injury-depleted defense featuring Per Mertesacker, the team’s captain, who was making his first start in more than a year, explained New York Times.
